OVERVIEW

After the climate emergency, conflict is the key challenge facing the human race. Two billion people or a quarter of the world’s population live with conflict; nearly 300 million people around the world need humanitarian assistance and protection as a result of conflict.

HALO is best known as the world’s leading landmine clearance charity. Since our founding in Afghanistan in 1988, we have destroyed over two million mines. Our painstaking work saves lives and protects men, women and children from terrible life-limiting injuries but it goes further than that. There can be no recovery after conflict until this work is done.

After 22 years of clearance, Mozambique has been declared mine free and we are rapidly on the way to enabling a similar future for Sri Lanka, Angola, Cambodia and Zimbabwe.

MISSION

Our mission is to protect lives and restore the livelihoods of those affected by conflict.

VISION

Our vision is a world where people can thrive in peace and dignity without fear from the impact of conflict.

PROGRAMS

For over 30 years, HALO has served those affected by conflict, clearing landmines, and explosive debris that indiscriminately threaten lives, limbs, and livelihoods long after fighting has finished.

Those displaced by conflict often return home to face  insecurity and the threat of these deadly devices. The Humanitarian imperative to clear explosive hazards to allow people to return home is unquestionable. HALO has adapted its clearance techniques to new urban battlefields in places like Iraq, Libya and Yemen. We now tackle the improvised devices and rubble contaminated with explosives left behind in cities when the fighting moves on.

-Risk Education: This is the first step in making people safe, often in places where we can’t yet begin clearance. The curiosity of children makes them a priority for our lessons, ensuring we teach each new generation that grows up around dangerous devices how to stay safe.

-Survey : HALO employs a range of methods to determine where  land and buildings are contaminated with explosives. We use our deep connections with local communities to discover where risks may lie and to understand historic or current conflicts. We also use innovations such as drone mounted sensors to plot the precise location of explosives contamination.
