Alfanar is the first venture philanthropy organisation focusing exclusively on the Arab world. Started by Tarek Ben Halim in 2004, Alfanar provides tailored financing, management support and impact monitoring and evaluation to ambitious social enterprises serving marginalised communities across the region, particularly those which economically empower women and youth and improve the standards of children’s education.
Alfanar fosters the growth of ambitious, self-reliant social ventures working to improve education and economically empower disadvantaged women and youth. Our venture philanthropy approach provides tailored financing, management support and impact evaluation aimed at helping our social enterprise investees to grow their organisations and impact in a financially sustainable manner.
We envision an Arab world in which the poor and vulnerable, especially women, children and youth, are able to access the education and opportunity they need to lead productive and dignified lives. Individuals who can stabilise their families, transform their communities, advance their countries and shift dynamics in a region overcome by conflict, despair and growing poverty.
Our objectives are to increase the capacities and financial sustainability of social enterprise organisations that improve the lives of marginalised groups in the Arab world, particularly children and women.
To date, Alfanar has invested in 33 social enterprises and tangibly improved the lives of 48,133 vulnerable individuals in the region. Click here to access our most recent Impact Report for an overview of our impact and current investments.
