OVERVIEW

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) helps people affected by humanitarian crises to survive, recover and rebuild their lives. We deliver lasting impact by providing health care, helping children learn, and empowering individuals and communities to become self-reliant, always with a focus on the unique needs of women and girls. Ingenuity, fortitude and optimism remain at the heart of who we are. Founded in 1933 at the call of Albert Einstein, we now work in over 40 crisis-affected countries as well as communities throughout Europe and the United States where refugees have resettled and are rebuilding their lives.

The IRC is one of the only global organizations that works across the entire arc of crisis: from a warzone in Syria to a refugee camp in Uganda to an American city where refugees are building new lives. We help each of our clients, wherever they are on their journey. With an understanding that every person’s needs are unique, multi-faceted and interlinked, our programs also work together to help our clients reclaim their safety, health, education, economic wellbeing and the agency to make important decisions that affect their lives and futures.

MISSION

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) helps people affected by humanitarian crises to survive, recover and rebuild their lives. Founded at the call of Albert Einstein in 1933, the IRC is now at work in over 40 crisis-affected countries as well as communities throughout Europe and the Americas. We deliver lasting impact by providing healthcare, helping children learn, and empowering individuals andcommunities to become self-reliant, always seeking to address the inequalities facing women and girls.

We empower our clients to reclaim their safety, health, education, economic wellbeing and the agency to make decisions that affect their lives and futures, always with a focus on the unique needs of women and girls. The world’s 110 million displaced people require more than “aid as usual”. Their growing and increasingly complex needs—driven by violent conflict and climate change—mandate a transformation in global humanitarian response. The IRC has taken this challenge head-on, together with our partners and the communities we serve.

As one of the only organizations that crisis-affected people in all contexts—from warzones in Ukraine to resettling refugees in dozens of cities across Europe and the Americas—the IRC has a unique approach to delivering impact for the people we serve which includes four key aspects:

  • Toughest places focus: responding rapidly and staying for as long as needed by the communities we support.
  • Putting people first: deploying programs which address our clients’ multi-faceted needs.
  • Building community: through our resettlement and integration work.
  • Relentless improvement: as an evidence-based organization, we constantly evaluate, adapt and improve our programs
