MENA Climate Philanthropy Ecosystem

Pre-Mapping

This pre-mapping is a first look at climate philanthropy across the Arab region, produced by the Arab Foundations Forum in partnership with WINGS. It brings together what is currently visible about who is funding climate-related work, in which countries, and across which themes, as a starting point to inform the next phase of regional dialogue and action.

Climate philanthropy in the Arab region remains under-documented, and much of the work happening on the ground is not captured in global datasets or reflected in international narratives. Part of the gap is structural: regional giving often moves through channels that sit outside global reporting frameworks, including faith-based and traditional instruments, family-led foundations, and locally rooted intermediaries. Part of it is narrative: when the region appears in global climate philanthropy conversations, it tends to feature as a site of vulnerability rather than a source of funding, knowledge, or strategy. The aim of this pre-mapping is to begin closing that gap and create a shared baseline that members, partners, and funders can build on.

Arab Philanthropy Commitment on Climate Change

In December 2023, at COP28, AFF proudly announced that we would be developing an Arab Philanthropy Commitment on Climate Change as part of the global #PhilanthropyForClimate movement. We convened a Working Group of 13 climate-conscious organizations, both AFF members and non-members, to draft the seven pillars of the commitment, taking into consideration the impacts of and solutions to climate change from an Arab perspective. With WINGS and AFF acting as Secretariat, the commitment was officially launched at COP29 in November 2024. Throughout 2025, the Working Group focused on developing the APCCC Implementation Guide, which we launched in February 2026.

AFF 2025 Recap

This past year unfolded amid heightened uncertainty and transformation across the Arab region and beyond. As geopolitical shifts and humanitarian crises intensified, so did the demand for philanthropy that is more strategic, coordinated, and accountable. In this context, the Arab Foundations Forum (AFF) continued to serve as a platform for alignment, shared learning, and collective action.

Rather than responding episodically, AFF focused on strengthening the infrastructure of philanthropy itself—enabling members to collaborate across borders and act with greater clarity and impact. As AFF celebrates its twentieth year in 2026, this moment marks a deliberate transition: from consolidation to renewal. AFF enters its next chapter focused on reinforcing credibility, deepening collaboration, and equipping its network to lead in an increasingly complex and consequential landscape.

Arab Philanthropy Survey

The latest version of our survey has been updated with the aim of gathering insights and hard numbers on how Arab foundations operate, the challenges they face, and how they have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
