Within minutes of the devastating explosion in the Beirut port on August 4, 2020, AUB doctors, nurses, and medical staff were preparing to care for the injured who they knew would come. In the first 24 hours, more than 500 casualties were treated at the AUB Medical Center. Although our first response was focused on caring for those who were injured, we quickly turned our attention to the significant needs in our community. As part of the AUB4Beirut Disaster Response, we have expanded outreach initiatives and established new units that are helping with clean-up and minor repairs; performing safety inspections of buildings; recycling material that could be re-used; and providing food and medications. Another priority is to secure funds for needs on our campus: especially student scholarships and repairs to the many buildings that were damaged on August 4, including our museum.
