Schools for Egypt:

In partnering with UNICEF, Sawiris Foundation for Social Development (SFSD) through its flagship program “Schools for Egypt”  aims improve access to the overall quality of education in rural Upper Egypt. This program will have a direct impact on approximately 3,600 children in the targeted districts and a much broader indirect impact in the larger community. The project activities in Assiut and Sohag, also have a potential to serve as a catalyst to spur nationwide change with the Ministry of Education. Ultimately, this partnership will ensure that more girls and vulnerable children have access to safe, healthy, and conducive learning environments; and more children will complete their education.

By making education accessible for more of Egypt’s children, SFSD will directly help to diminish the incidences of early marriage, child labor, and the number of street children. An investment in Schools for Egypt is a first step to changing the shape of education in Egypt for generations to come.

In order to create a successful model that has the potential to transform the education system in Egypt, SFSD has invested in the following activities:

  • Establish 120 child-friendly community schools that are close to children’s homes with safe, healthy, and stimulating learning environments in which corporal punishment is eliminated, child-centered teaching is applied, and classroom furniture and learning materials are available for children and teachers. The 120 child-friendly community schools will be free with no hidden costs, encouraging families to send their children to school.
  • Enroll 3600 children (approximately 70 percent girls) between ages of 6 and 14 in school. Schools for Egypt will reach 3,600 children over the course of the project. Each of these children will receive a quality primary education. The SFSD investment will indirectly strengthen the quality of Egypt’s community-based educational system through improved teaching standards and quality assurance.
  • Develop and lead a face-to-face training program for 240 community school teachers and 60 supervisors to empower teachers with interactive and effective teaching methods to meet the needs of their individual students. Teachers will learn how to successfully communicate with students and how to encourage students to participate and ask questions in a child-friendly environment. When educators are equipped with tools to successfully lead and teach children, their presence can help boost student attendance and educational achievement. This training program will be further utilized by the Ministry of Education to reach and benefit an additional 10,000 community school teachers.
  • Train ministry of education staff on tracking the progress of schools for Egypt. A full time UNICEF staff person will work closely with the Ministry of Education, civil society and communities to supervise the project and ensure effective project management, reporting, and accountability responsibilities. A set of minimum standards and indicators that reflect child-friendly principles for quality assurance in community-based schools will also be developed to improve the quality of education for all children in community schools.
